Governor Wike said, “We have seen that there is a hidden agenda. But nobody can destroy the PDP. PDP will wax stronger. Those around the former acting National Chairman have questionable character. They are people who think that they can use the judiciary to cause crisis…In my entire political career, I have never seen a man with many opponents as Senator Sheriff. Modu Sheriff should apologize to the party.”
The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, released the statement via his media aide; Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu; saying that Senator Modu Sheriff is a desperate man, who wanted the PDP chairmanship by all means after the results of the screening committee showed that the Senator was ineligible to contest for the position of national chairman of the PDP.
Crises in the PDP
You will recall that on Saturday May 21, the Wike-led faction of the PDP held its national convention in Port Harcourt to elect a new national chairman of the PDP, party secretary and auditor. The run-up to the convention in Port Harcourt had been marred by crises leading to a Federal High sitting in Lagos to issue an order to prevent the party from electing officers in the offices of the chairman, secretary and auditor at the convention. Meanwhile another court sitting in Abuja had issued an order allowing the party to conduct elections only for the party’s national chairman and one other position.
Wike had vowed that the convention would go on as originally planned having filed an appeal and stay of execution of the court order that barred from the PDP from conducting elections at its national convention in Port Harcourt.
While the PDP national held in Port Harcourt, there was a parallel PDP national convention that held in Abuja led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu of the PDP Concerned Group as a waste of time since all party leaders were already in Port Harcourt. The Port Harcourt convention was attended by the PDP governors in 12 states controlled by the party. Former governor Godswill Akpabio was also in Port Harcourt for the convention. The Deputy Senate Presdient, Minority Leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives and the BoT chairman were present in Port Harcourt.
But in sudden turn of events on Saturday May 21, the PDP postponed its planned national convention that was vowed to hold that same day, and instead appointed a caretaker committee to elect a new NWC for the PDP within 3 months. The committee is headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kaduna state.
The removed national chairman of the PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff says he was betrayed in Port Harcourt and claims he remains the national chairman of the PDP.
Wike demands apology
Wike has demanded that the sacked party (PDP) Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff apologize to the party over his conduct before and after its convention which held on May 21, 2016 in Port Harcourt.
So the PDP crises is not over yet.
