Successful Schools Farm Agric Business Initiative: Governor Wike’s Pilot Scheme for Students

On the 5th February 2016, Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike flagged off the School Farm Agric Business Initiative, a pilot scheme at Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt.

The Governor while addressing the students and teachers emphasized that agriculture will be given priority in the state. He said that gone are the days where students learn only theory without practicals. Henceforth, school farm system will be re-introduced in the state, starting with Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta. Every student must have school farm and must produce what they eat. He believed the state will produce some who will take it up as a business. Governor Wike advised and warned the teachers not to expect the students to harvest the produce for their consumption as Government will not invest money only for them to eat it. Governor Wike also said that his administration will build hostels and well equipped laboratories for students.

Young Farmers Association Initiative (Rivers State)

This is an initiative for secondary school students. Once the students graduate, they will be registered to any other farmers associations in Nigeria.  The young farmers will have benefits from sponsors, government and parent association such as All Farmers Association of Nigeria. With this, the students who are thought in the classroom will be motivated and exposed to the bigger world at an early stage.

This writer is highly motivated to invest in Agriculture after visiting almost all major farms in Nigeria at an early stage. Excursion to Farms in Nigeria will make students to believe in what they are doing and thought in the classroom. They will also see the business aspect of farming.

The government and people of Rivers State is committed to seeing its young lads become successful in agriculture. Take advantage of this initiative and feed the state with your products in agriculture.
