Finally, the continent has found a worthy footballer to break the jinx of the annual Confederation of African Fooball (CAF) Award Player of the Year Award being awarded to Yaya Toure since 2011. Since joining Manchester City in 2010, Toure had won the coveted award four consecutive times in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
The year 2015 looked like following the same trend but a worthy Gabonese was destined to snatch the title from the Ivorian. His name is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the in form Borussia Dortmund striker and the current highest goal scorer in the Bundesliga. Aubameyang was pronounced the CAF player of the year 2015 last night in Abuja, narrowly beating the Ivorian by 7 points.
Born 18, June 1989 in France, Aubameyang began his career at AC Milan and was loaned to four different French clubs before he made a permanent move to Saint-Étienne in 2011. He joined Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and has since been one of the club’s crucial players. Although he had once played for France Under-21, Aubameyang made his senior international debut for Gabon in 2009, and has been representing his country of origin since.
Aubameyang is quite versatile, having the capacity to function in all areas of attacking midfield and as a strike. As a matter of fact, he currently leads the scorers’ table in the Bundesliga with 18 goals thus far this season ahead of Lewandowski. He is a very good set piece taker capable of scoring direct free kicks and penalties for both club and country. Aubameyang also possess great ball control and dribbling ability, enabling him to beat most players one on one and create chances. More importantly, he is arguably one of the fastest players in the world, having a tie with Arjen Robben for the fastest sprint recorded on the football pitch.
The new CAF Player of the year has won a Coupe de la Ligue with Saint-Étienne in 2013. He has also won two DFL Supercup titles with Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and 2014. He was the Ligue 1 Best African Player in 2012-13 and shortlisted in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2012-13. He was the highest Goal Scorer for Dortmund in 2014-15. Last year, he was Runner-up to Yaya Toure in the CAF Player of the Year Award. He’s the only player from his country to have won the title.
